DELIVERANCE AND HEALING
By PBS Ministries
God has commanded us to live a life worthy of the calling we have received. A life where we are always humble and gentle, patient and bearing with one another in love. By God’s grace, He has gifted some in the church to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare His people for works of service, and to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach maturity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God.
When God calls us into ministry, He anoints us for that particular office. This anointing is to empower us to do the will of God. There is nothing we can do in our own strength, we must first be clothed with power from on high. Before Saul became King of Israel, he had to be anointed. The Lord revealed to Samuel to anoint Saul ruler over the people in Israel so he could deliver them from the hand of the Philistines. Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance? Saul was confirmed as King and fought successful wars against Israel’s enemies.
But because of disobedience, Saul was rejected as King by God, he lost his anointing and became powerless. The anointing of God is for a purpose. Isaiah 10:27 tells us that the yoke is destroyed because of the anointing. If we are not anointed to do God’s work, our self-effort will be futile. In the Book of 1 Samuel 16, the Lord told Samuel to fill his horn with oil and go to Jesse of Bethlehem, for He has chosen one of his sons to be king. Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. In his youth, he killed the mighty giant Goliath with a sling and a stone and he successfully defeated the enemies of Israel. The anointing upon our lives gives us the power and strength.
The Prophet Elisha was so anointed that he enabled a barren Shunammite woman to get a son. According to 2Kings 4:16-17, “About this time next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.” “No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!” But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her. He also healed the leper Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, by having him wash seven times in the Jordan River.
Every born-again believer has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. First John 2:20;27 tell us that we have an anointing from the Holy One and all of us know the truth. This anointing we received from Him remains in us and teaches us about all things, “and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you, remain in Him.” The anointing within us works by teaching us God’s ways and conforming us to His likeness. We have the ability to walk by the Spirit so as not to gratify the things of the flesh. God’s word say in Galatians 5:19-21 that the acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. Only the Holy Spirit within us can enable us to live a holy and pleasing life to God.
The anointing upon us gives us supernatural abilities to do certain things for a special task. The Book of Acts 10:38 tells us that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
With the anointing upon Jesus’ life, He performed many miracles. He raised Lazarus from the dead, He turned water into wine, He fed 5000 people with 2 fish and five barley loaves. He gave sight to the blind, He opened deaf ears, He cast out demons, He made the crippled walk, healed a woman with an issue of blood and the list goes on. The Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 4 states that Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about Him spread all over Syria, and people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and He healed them. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed Him.
The gift of the Holy Spirit was also upon the apostles to empower them to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. With power and authority, Peter and John healed a beggar that was lame from birth who begged daily at the Temple gate called Beautiful. This led to many being converted to Christianity.
Peter went from town to town healing the sick and telling people about Jesus Christ. He healed Aeneas, a paralyzed man who had been bedridden for eight years and he raised Tabitha from the dead. So powerful was the anointing of God upon Peter’s life that people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. (Acts 5:15)
God also did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them
The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people and more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.
This same anointing is for us today. For Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. Luke 4:18 says “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed. When Jesus gave the Great Commission to go and preach the Gospel to all nations, He said and lo, I will be with you always, even to the end of time.
Today, men and women still minister in the supernatural power of God. Well known American televangelist, Oral Roberts (1918-2009) proved to the world that he had the anointing of God upon his life. He healed many people as he prayed and layed hands on the sick and many souls were saved during his healing and deliverance ministries that were broadcast to millions of followers worldwide.
Also, more than 3.2 million people have responded to the invitation at Billy Graham Crusades to “accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior”. As of 2008, Graham’s estimated lifetime audience, including radio and television broadcasts, topped 2.2 billion.
In all of our ways, let us acknowledge God for it is He alone who will make our paths straight. Let us not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind. It is the anointing that breaks the yoke. Let us not abuse or misuse the anointing upon our lives, but live in obedience to God, for to obey is better than sacrifice. And as we are called to freedom, let us not use our freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another with the power and authority of God upon our lives. Amen
