You Must Be Born Again

By Petal Barclay-Smith

We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The Bible tells us that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. We have strayed far away from God and we deserve His punishment. But because of His goodness and love towards us, God sent His only begotten Son as a sacrifice for our sins. If we believe on the Lord Jesus, repent of our sins and give God control of our life, we will not have to face the damnation of a fiery furnace. Rather, we will be a blessed people that will spend eternity in Heaven with our risen Savior and soon coming King.

In the Gospel of John Chapter 3, Nicodemus who was a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council asked Jesus, “How can someone be born again when they are old?” “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” In verses 5-7, Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’

baptismJesus wants us to be born again not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides forever. If we live in the flesh we will gravitate towards worldly pleasures which will lead us further into darkness, thereby separating us from the presence of God.

The acts of the flesh are sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.  Jesus warns us that whoever lives to please the flesh will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Our God stands for holiness and righteousness.  You are either for God or you are against God. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

We are to keep our body pure for it is temple of God. If we destroy God’s temple, which is sacred, God will destroy us.  But, God has given us an opportunity to have our sins washed away by the cleansing Blood of Jesus Christ who was crucified, buried and He arose the third day, so that we can live a life free of sin and we can make Heaven our home eternal if we believe in Him.

Jesus said we must be born again of water and the Spirit. When we believe, confess and repent of our sins and follow Jesus through water baptism, only then we can be called the sons of God.  And if we are children of a Holy God, we must live in the Spirit to bear fruit that is in keeping with the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness and faithfulness.

God wants us to be obedient and faithful to His Word. The Bible tells us that no good thing will be withheld from those who live according to the Word of God. If you are righteous, you will receive the blessings of God. He will surround you with favor as with a shield. The psalmist David said, I have been young, now I am old, yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken or his seen begging bread.

If you are not saved today, I encourage you to get to know Jesus Christ, our deliverer, our restorer, our healer. Jesus wants to take you out of this dark world and bring you into light. He wants to give you a new life in Him. A life of righteousness, a life where you will be blessed, a life of favor and a life of abundance. If you need to give your life to Jesus, so that He can take over the driving seat and lead you into your secured destiny, please pray this prayer.

Father, I thank you for your Son Jesus Christ. I believe Jesus is Lord. I believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead. I confess that I am a sinner and I repent and ask your forgiveness of my sins. Make me clean and whole as I surrender my entire life to serve you, in Jesus name, Amen.
