Heart that bears fruit

By Petal Barclay-Smith

During Jesus’ life on earth, He went about doing good, healing the sick, performing many miracles and teaching and preaching.

As large crowds followed Him around, Jesus got into a boat and sat there to teach the crowd as they stood on the shore. We read in Matthew, Chapter 13 that Jesus told the people many things in parables. His parables were often stories He used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson.

In verses 3 to 9, Jesus said to the crowd: “A farmer went out to sow his seed.  As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.  Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.  But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

According to this passage of Scripture, the seed is the message of the Kingdom of God.  Andheart the soil refers to the condition of our heart. When the Word of God is preached, some may hear the message, but may not understand it. At this point, the devil comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. Secondly, many people may hear the Word of God and receive it with joy, but since their heart is like shallow soil on rocky ground, the message only last for a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

Thirdly, the seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the Word, but the worries of this life – the recession, loss of job, loss of homes and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the Word, making it unfruitful.

Finally, as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the Word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Believers, If we hold to Jesus’ teaching, we will be His disciples.  For we will know the truth and the truth will set us free. Jesus asked the Jews, “Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.  He said to them, “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

In our world today, there are many people who cannot bear to hear the Word of God. They are comfortable living in darkness. The evil desires of this corrupt world have so clogged their mind that they cannot comprehend the marvelous light that God wants to bring them into.

Many people today continue to practice sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, hatred, lust, lasciviousness, drunkenness and such like. But the Bible warns us that if we sow to please our flesh, we will reap destruction from the flesh, but if we sow to please the Spirit, from the Spirit, we will reap eternal life. The Psalmist David declares that the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

I encourage us to live in the Spirit. Let us live a holy and righteous life, even as our Heavenly Father is Holy. It is not God’s will for any to perish. The Blood of Jesus Christ was shed at Calvary to make us clean and whole again. We do not have to die a sinner and go to eternal Hell.

Let us ask God to create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us. If you have not received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, I encourage you to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Let God save you from this corrupt generation. Call on Him and He will hear you and help you. For he is a loving God. Amen
