Barriers to life

By Petal Barclay-Smith

In the world today, it is very easy to be trapped by evil desires, by passion, impurity, covetousness and idolatry. No doubt, the things of the world are so glamorous that we do not want to part with them to follow Christ. Not many people are willing to sell their belongings and follow Christ, so as to spend eternal life with Him. For many, their wealth and riches are barriers that separate them from God and caused them to spend eternity in Hell.

We read in the Gospel of Mark, Chapter 10, verses 17-22 of the rich man who wanted to follow Jesus but could not, because he chose to hold fast to his wealth. As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.  You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.”

“Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.”

Like many of us, the rich man wanted eternal life, but the lust of the flesh, the lust of the KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAeyes and the pride of life are our barriers.  Not many today want to give up sexual immorality, not many want to give up idolatry, and not many want to give up drugs, alcohol and lasciviousness.

The rich man was proud. He could not stand to lose image in the eyes of his people for he was very wealthy. Pride and idolatry are sins God hate. They keep us from serving the Lord. God hates a proud person and He promises to break down their stubborn pride. You cannot serve God and money. Jesus said you cannot serve two masters at the same time, you will either love the one and hate the other or you will despise one and love the other.

To follow Christ calls for some sacrifices. Jesus said if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. We are to put to death what is earthly in us. Even though we live in the world, we must not be of the world. Just like when you are married, you have to give up previous relationships, you have to change your old way of doing things, you have to leave your baggage behind and live a selfless life if you want to have a meaningful marriage. When we are in Christ, we become a new creation, old things are passed away and all things are become new.

Jesus said if you cannot give up all you have, you cannot be His disciple. He saw the fishermen, Simon and his brother Andrew casting their  net into the sea, and He said to them, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men. And immediately they left their nets and followed Him. He also saw James and John in their boat, He called them and immediately they left and followed Him.

Jesus knows us by our name. Today, if you hear that call, I encourage you to answer and follow Jesus.  Do not allow material things to separate you from the love of Christ. You will gain the whole world, but still lose your soul and have to spend eternity in Hell. I have never seen a Hearse with a trailer with your material things. What you find hard to give up now, you still have to depart this earth and leave them.  But if your soul is right with God, He promises you abundant life in this life and the life to come. What we try to hold onto is nothing compared to what God has in store for us.

The choice is yours today. Now is the time of God’s favor. Now is the day of Salvation. Make that decision today. Not to decide is to decide not to. You can be cleansed of your sins by the Blood of Jesus instantly. You can begin a new life in Christ today, if you accept His call, leave your past behind and follow Christ. He promises to never leave you or forsake.  He will be with you every step of the way.

Let God save you from this corrupt generation. Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. If you have purposed in your heart to follow Jesus, I invite you to say this prayer.

Father, be merciful to me a sinner and save my soul from all sin. I believe in my heart that Jesus is Lord and that You raised Him from the dead. I ask your forgiveness of my sins. I receive Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and I will live for Him forever from this day onwards in Jesus name, Amen.

Another great lesson with a lot of depth. Until we as believers are willing to let go of self and allow truth to prevail we will always be in denial of truth. Where self is there is no truth, where truth is there is no self. We must allow self to die so that truth can live. How can we pick up our cross and follow Christ when we are lovers of self. Thank you for sharing such beautiful words of wisdom and truth.
